Make Indian Railways safer and cleaner

At least 35 people, mostly pilgrims, died on Monday when a fast moving passenger train ran over them in Bihar. According to Arunendra Kumar, chairman of the railway board, "The accident occurred because some people left the platform of the station and came on the tracks." However, this does not absolve railway officials of responsibility. The accident may be due to passengers trespassing on railway tracks, but the officials at the police station should have forewarned them before allowing the train to pass.

According to a recent report of the Railways' safety review committee, deaths on the tracks because of trespassing are far higher and amount to a massacre. "A large number of casualties take place over the entire railway system due to unlawful trespassing though exact figures have not been compiled by the railways and are not readily available. The estimation is almost 15,000 persons get killed in such a manner every year," the report said. Indian Railways are reluctant to own to these casualties, which do not fall under the purview of train accidents.

Nevertheless, the fact that such a large number of deaths occur on account of trains can by no means be ignored. No civilised society can accept such massacre on their railway system. While accidents at unmanned railway crossing continue, the cash-strapped national transporter is yet to put its act together to eliminate these death traps numbering about 12,582 across the country. Railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge has recently admitted that Indian Railways is not able to achieve the desired level of progress due to limited availability of funds which were being distributed over a large number of projects. The truth is that safety and hygiene are the least priority for the railways which is more concerned about super-fast trains to cater to the rich. The Railways should set aside a fixed percentage of its revenue for safety and hygiene and set up a system of accountability.
